Gerard Murphy (1900 - 1959):
Gerard Murphy was born in Clones, County Monaghan. He was educated at University College, Dublin. He was Assistant Librarian of the National Library before becoming Professor of the History of Celtic Literature at University College, Dublin, from 1938 to 1959. From 1939 to 1957 he edited Eigse and collected, edited and translated into English, an anthology of Gaelic verse, published as Early Irish Lyrics, 1946. Among his other publications are Tales from Ireland (1947); Ossianic Lore and Romantic Tales of Medieval Ireland, (1955); Saga and Myth in Ancient Ireland and Early Irish Metrics, both 1961.
