Edward Murphy was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he studied classics. In 1903 he was called to the Bar, and from 1929 to 1939 represented Londonderry city in the Northern Ireland parliament. From 1937 to 1939 he was Attorney-General, before becoming Lord Justice of Appeal in the Northern Ireland Supreme Court.
