James Murphy was born in Comber, County Down, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He became a Presbyterian minister in Ballyshannon in 1836, and was Professor of Hebrew in Belfast in 1847. He translated the Book of Daniel and wrote Latin and Hebrew grammars, as well as publishing The Human Mind.
