Edward Law was born in Rostrevor, County Down, and was educated at Woolwich, after which he entered the Royal Artillery in 1868. He resigned after four years and became consul at St Petersburg in Russia. In 1885 he served in the Sudan and was later Finance Minister of India. He was knighted in 1898 and died in Paris.
