John Nolan was born in County Tyrone and was educated at the Christian Brothers' School, Omagh, and University College, Dublin. In 1920 he became Professor of Experimental Physics, and in 1940 was Registrar of the College. He was President of the Royal Irish Academy and Chairman of the School of Cosmic Physics in the Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. He published several papers on atmospheric electricity and ionisation.
