Andrew McConnell was born in Belfast and was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Trinity College, Dublin, where in 1946 and 1947 he was Provost, having been first Senior Moderator of Science. From 1946 to 1961 he was Regius Professor of Surgery, Trinity College, Dublin, and had served as Professor of Surgery in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
