Galbraith Cole was born in Dublin and entered the army, serving in the West Indies and in Egypt. He was member of parliament for Enniskillen and Fermanagh for twenty years. He rose to the rank of general and served in the Penninsular War. He was knighted, and from 1823 to 1833 he served as Governor of Mauritius and the Cape. A monument to him stands on Fort Hill in Enniskillen.
