Charles Wood was born in Armagh and was educated at Armagh Cathedral School. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London in 1883 and studied under Stanford. In 1890 he graduated in music at Cambridge University. He became organist at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and taught at the Royal College of Music. He succeeded Stanford as Professor of Music at Cambridge in 1924. He composed songs, string quartets and organ preludes, and the latter are still performed regularly. He died in Cambridge.
