Henry Ussher was born in Dublin, and was educated at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. He was appointed Archdeacon of Dublin and was the first Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, to be named in the college's charter. He served as Vice-Provost of the college in 1594 and was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in the following year.
