Katherine Russell was born in Ballybot, near Newry, County Down, and was educated in Belfast and Kinsale. She was a pioneer Sister of Mercy in California, and in 1854 became Mother Superior in San Francisco, where she was instrumental in founding hospitals and convents. She died there.
