Joseph Gillis Biggar (1828 - 1890):
Joseph Biggar was born in Belfast. He was a provision merchant and became active in nationalist politics, sitting as member of parliament for Cavan from 1874 to 1890. He was the originator of the policy of 'obstruction' in the House of Commons. He was a Presbyterian who converted to Catholicism. He was a member of the Fenians from 1875 to 1877, and treasurer of the Land League.
