Hugh Annesley (1831 - 1908): |
Hugh Annesley was born in Dublin and was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Dublin. In 1851 he entered the army where he attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1860, having been severely wounded in the Kaflir War. He returned to Ireland in 1871 and in 1875 became 5th Earl of Castlewellan. From 1857 to 1874 he was Conservative Member of Parliament for Cavan. He was a horticulturalist, and estab-lished the arboretum at Castlewellan. From the late 1850s to the early 1900s he was also a keen amateur photographer, and pub-lished a botanical book that he illustrated with his own photographs. His collection is in the Public Record Office, Belfast. He died in Castlewellan.
