Randal M'Donnell was bron in Dublin and was educated at Armagh Royal School and Trinity College, Dublin. He worked as assistant librarian in Marshes Library, and then as an inspector. He published three volumes of poetry, and many works of fiction among which are Kathleen Mavourneen (1898); When Cromwell Came to Drogheda (1906); My Sword For Patrick Sarsfield (1907) and Ardnaree (1911).
