Alexander MacDonnell was born in Belfast and was involved in business in Demerara in the West Indies between 1820 and 1830. He was appointed secretary to the West Indies Merchant Committee. He was one of the finest chess-players in the world, and a number of his games are in a publication by W. G. Walker.
