James McCosh (1811 - 1894):
Cleric, Presbyterian and academic


James M'Cosh was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, was educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, and was ordained in the Presbyterian ministry. In 1850 he was appointed Professor of Logic and Metaphysics in Queen's College, Belfast. This appointment was satirised by Thackeray in Punch. He was appointed President of Princeton College, America, in 1868 and remained there for twenty years.
