Hugh McCalmont was born in County Antrim. He joined the army in 1865, serving in Canada, Egypt and South Africa. He was promoted to the rank of major-general in 1896, and was member of parliament for North Antrim for four years until 1899, and for the next four years was army commander in the Cork District. He was knighted in 1900, and his autobiography was published in 1924.
