Arthur Edward Kennedy (1810 - 1883):
Colonial Governor


Arthur Kennedy was born in Cultra, County Down, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He retired from the army after twenty-one years' service and became a Poor Law inspector during the Famine. In 1851 he was appointed Governor of Gambia and in 1854 of West Australia. He was knighted in 1868 and served as Governor of Hong Kong in 1872 and of Queensland in 1877. He died at sea when he was returning home.
