Mary Hutton was born in Manchester, and was educated at University College, London. When she was forty-nine she became a convert to Roman Catholicism. She was a Celtic scholar and in 1909 was the Margaret Stokes Memorial Lecturer and a member of the Senate of Queen's University, Belfast. Among her publications are an edition of Tain Bo Cuailgne, which she spent ten years translating into English.
