Robert Hunter was born in Ulster, but worked as a portrait painter in Dublin from 1750 to 1780. The principal portrait painter in Ireland, he painted portraits of, among others, John Wesley, Lord Harcourt and Lord Naas. He helped found the Society of Artists in Dublin, and often exhibited there. Many of his portraits were engraved. Five of his paintings are in the National Gallery of Ireland.
