Thomas Houston was born in Coleraine, County Londonderry, and was educated at Coleraine Academical Institution, Queen's College, Belfast, and the Royal University of Ireland, where he graduated with a degree in medicine. He became an authority on clinical pathology and was a pioneer in bacteriological research.
