James Henderson was born in Belfast and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He was called to the Bar in 1872 and from 1873 for the next ten years was editor of the Newry Telegraph. From 1883 to 1914 he was managing proprietor of the Belfast Weekly News and the Belfast Newsletter. In 1898 he was appointed the first Lord Mayor of Greater Belfast, and in 1900 was the first High Sheriff of Belfast.
