Edmund Hayes was born in County Down, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He was called to the Bar in 1827 and attained a Doctorate in Laws by 1832. Twenty years later he was made Queen's Counsel and became law adviser to Dublin Castle. He was raised to the Bench in 1859. He is the author of several legal works.
