John Garvey was born in County Kilkenny and was educated at Oxford. He was appointed Dean of Ferns in 1558 and of christ church in 1565. After serving as Bishop of Kilmore from 1585 to 1589, he was appointed Archbishop of Armagh and remained there until his death.
