John Atkinson was born in Drogheda and was educated at Queen's College, Galway. He was called to the Bar in 1865 and served as Solicitor-General from 1889 to 1892. For a brief period in 1892 he served as Attorney-General, a post which he reoccupied from 1895 to 1905. He was also Unionist member of parliament for North Londonderry.
