James Flemming was born in Strabane, County Tyrone, and was and educated at Shrewsbury and Cambridge. He was ordained in 1853 and became chaplain to the royal family in 1876. He was a popular preacher and was made Canon of York in 1879. He published Art of Reading Sermons and the Life of Queen Alexandra.[Biography by A. R. Finlayson].
