John Colton was born in Norfolk. In 1373 he was appointed Lord Treasurer of Ireland and in 1374 became the Dean of St Patrick's, Dublin. He became Lord Chancellor in 1380 and Lord Justice in 1382. In 1381 he was raised to the primacy by Pope Urban V1. He wrote Visitation of the Diocese of Derry in 1397 and it was published in 1850 with a preface by William Reeves. He is buried in the Church of St Peter at Drogheda.
