John Anderson was born in County Londonderry and was a prominent geologist and bibliographer. He was Treasurer of the Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society, President of the Belfast Naturalists' Field Club and a Fellow of the Geological Society. His works include a History of the Linen Hall Library, and a five-part Catalogue of Early Belfast Printed Books, 1694-1830. He died in Holywood, County Down.
