James Anderson was born in Derry and graduated from the Royal University of Ireland in 1905. In 1907 he was called to the bar and in 1910 became Professor of Political Economy and Jurisprudence at University College, Cork. In 1914 he was appointed Reid Professor of Criminal and Constitutional Law at Trinity College, Dublin.
