Samuel Bryson (1778 - 1853):
Surgeon and antiquarian


Samuel Bryson was born in Belfast and became a surgeon in the army. He returned to Belfast and worked on the staff of the Old Royal Hospital in Frederick Street. He wrote and collected several manuscripts in the Irish language and in 1805 published Remains of the Irish Bards. He promoted the study of the Irish language and literature, and Belfast Public Library is the repository for his work.
