Robert Tennent was born in County Antrim. He studied medicine and went to the West Indies and worked as an agent for several properties in Jamaica. He joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon in 1793, and served on the Europe. He left the navy in 1799 and settled in Belfast where he became Treasurer of the Belfast Hospital and was involved with the Hibernian Bible Society and the Belfast Harp Society.
