Henry Swanzy was born in Newry, County Down, and was educated locally and at Trinity College, Dublin. He was ordained in 1899, and in 1926 became a canon of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, and five years later Dean of Dromore. He was an ardent genealogist and was the author of many family histories and of the History of the Diocese of Dromore. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy and of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. He died in a street accident in London.
