Joseph Scriven was born near Banbridge and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1847 he emigrated to Canada where he settled at Port Hope, Ontario, and became a teacher and a preacher with the Plymouth Brethern. He wrote the hymn 'What a Friend We Have In Jesus'
