Oliver St John, Viscount Grandison and Baron Tregoz, came to Ireland in 1601. Having taken part in the Battle of Kinsale, he then became a mamber of the Ulster Plantation Commision, gaining land for himself in County Armagh. In 1616 he was appointed Lord Deputy and banished all friars and monks who had been educated abroad. After Ulster, he went on to plant County Leitrim and County Longford. He was recalled to England in 1622.
