Shane MacBrian O'Neill ( - 1616):
Irish chieftain

Shane O'Neill was the last chief of Clandeboye and took part in the rebellion of Hugh O'Neill. He captured Edenduffcarrick and Belfast from the English in 1597, but later surrendered and was pardoned. The O'Neills of Clandeboye were dispossessed of six hundred thousand acres under the Ulster plantation of James I. Shane was allowed to keep one hundred and twenty thousand acres, his castle in Edencarrickduff at Randalstown, County Antrim, and the baronies of Antrim and Toome. The castle, of which only a ruined tower now stands, is known as Shane's Castle.
