Gilla an Choimh Dedh O Carain witnessed the charter granted to the Abbey of Newry, County Down, and was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1175. It is said that he was present at the battle near Downpatrick when John de Courcy defeated the Ulstermen in 1177.
