Donough O'Brien was brought up at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1581 he became Earl of Thomond. He assisted in quelling Tyrone's rebellion and defended Newry, County Down, on behalf of the English. In 1601 he took part in the Battle of Kinsale and in 1605 became President of Munster. In 1615 he was appointed Governor of Clare.
