William Nicholl was born in Church Lane, Belfast. He was in business as a ship's chandler and flax merchant in Belfast. He exhibited with his brother Andrew, at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, in 1832. He painted many watercolours around the Knock area in Belfast, where he lived and died, and is buried in Knock graveyard. The Ulster Museum has some of his paintings.
