William Mushett was born in County Londonderry, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, Leyden and Cambridge, where he became a Doctor of Medicine in 1746. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and was physician to the armed forces. He declined a baronetcy and died in York.
