Edward Maginn was born in Fintona, County Donegal, and was educated at the Irish College, Paris, where he was ordained in 1825. He supported the Repeal movement, but transferred his allegiance to the Young Irelanders. He was appointed coadjutor to the Bishop of Derry in 1845. He wrote frequently to local newspapers on political matters.
