William Magennis was born in Belfast and was educated at Belvedere College, Dublin, and University College, Dublin. In 1893 he was called to the Bar, and from 1922 to 1927 he represented the National University of Ireland in the Dail. He he held the Chair of Metaphysics at University College, Dublin.
