Peter Magennis was born in Tandragee, County Armagh, and was educated at St Malachy's College, Belfast, and the Royal University of Ireland. He entered the Carmelite novitiate and was ordained in 1894. From 1908 to 1919 he was Assistant General and from 1919 to 1931 General of the Order of Calced Carmelites, the first Irishman to occupy this position.
