William Grey Ellison Macartney (1852 - 1924):
Politician and colonial governor


William Ellison Macartnev was born in Dublin and was educated at Eton and Oxford. He was called to the Bar in 1878 and served as member of parliament for South Antrim for eighteen years until 1903, when he became Deputy Master of the Royal Mint. From 1913 to 1917 he was Governor of Tasmania, and for the next three years, Governor of Western Australia. He was a privy councillor, and was knighted in 1913. He died in London.
