James Sheridan Knowles (1784 - 1862):

James Sheridan Knowles was born in Cork. For a time he was an ensign in the militia and then studied medicine at Aberdeen. He taught in Belfast and Glasgow, but his principal activity was the writing of plays, among which are Virginius; The Hunchback; The Wife; The Love Chase and William Tell. In 1844 he became a Baptist preacher and published religious literature. He died in Torquay.
