Robert Routledge Kane (1841 - 1898):
Cleric, Church of Ireland

Robert Kane was born in Newtownstewart, County Tyrone, and became the Church of Ireland Rector of Tullylish, County Down, in 1872. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin and gained a Master of Arts degree in 1880 and a doctorate in 1882. He moved to Christ's Church, Belfast in that same year, and was renowned not only for his violent speeches against Home Rule but also for his nationalist stance which he paradoxically adopted when economic aspects of Irish politics were being debated.
