Hugh Hamilton was born in County Fermanagh and entered the Swedish army, where he became a general. By 1648 he had become a naturalised Swedish noble and was created a baron. Charles II gave him an Irish peerage, as baron of Glenawley. He settled at Ballygawley, County Tyrone, and eventually died there. He was the uncle of Hugh Hamilton.
