Henry Hamilton was born in Coolaghey, County Donegal, and was educated at Raphoe and Queen's College, Belfast. He became a Doctor of Medicine in 1875 and entered the Indian military service a year later. In 1878 he took part in the march to Gandahar and was appointed Senior Medical Officer on the Chitral expedition. He served as Principal Medical Officer on the Chinese expedition of 1900-1901. He was knighted and died in Mentone.
