John Gwynn (1827 - 1917):
Biblical scholar


John Gwynn was born in Larne, County Antrim, and was educated at Portora Royal School, Enniskillen, and Trinity College, Dublin, where he became a fellow in 1853. He qualified as Doctor of Divinity and Doctor of Civil Law, the latter at Oxford. For eight years from 1856 he was Warden of St Columba's College, Rathfarnham. He was Dean of Raphoe and Derry and in 1888 was appointed Regius Professor of Divinity at Trinity College, Dublin, a position which he held until 1907. Among his publications are translations from the Syriac and he also edited The Book of Armagh in 1913.
