Robert Gage was born in Ballycastle, County Antrim, and was educated at the Derry Diocesan School and Trinity College, Dublin, from where he received a Master of Arts degree in 1843. He returned to Rathlin and remained there for the rest of his life. On his death, his Birds of Rathlin Island was donated to the Belfast Museum.
