William Hamilton Drummond (1778 - 1865):
Cleric, Presbyterian and poet


William Hamilton Drummond was born in Larne, County Antrim, and was educated in Belfast and Glasgow. He was ordained in Belfast in 1800 and became minister of Holywood, County Down. He opened a boarding school at Mount Collier, outside Belfast, but left for a parish in Dublin in 1815. He wrote a great deal of poetry as well as history, and his books include Ancient Irish Minstrelsy, 1852; The Battle of Trafalgar; The Giant's Causeway; Clontarf and Bruce's Invasion of Ireland, and he paraphrased many poems from Old Irish sources.
