James Bruen was born in Belfast, and was educated in Cork, where he later became an insurance broker. He excelled at playing golf and, having won the British Boys' Championship in 1936, was chosen to play in the British and Irish Walker Cup team in 1938. He was the first Irishman to win the British Amateur championship (1946).
